Task & commission job scam

A 'remote job' that pays you to click tasks — then demands deposits to 'unlock' higher commissions.

MigrantStudent

How it works

You're recruited via WhatsApp, Telegram or TikTok for an easy job: 'rate hotels', 'like YouTube videos' or 'optimise products'. Tiny first commissions are paid out to build trust. Soon you hit a 'combination task' that puts your balance into the negative — you must top up with your own money (often USDT) to continue and 'unlock' your earnings. Each top-up triggers another.

Common scenarios to watch for

This scam shows up in several different shapes. Recognise the pattern, not just one message.

Hotlines on the printed checklist will match this location.
1

WhatsApp recruiter 'easy remote job'

A cold WhatsApp/Telegram message offers $200-$800/day rating hotels or liking videos. After signing up you complete tiny tasks and receive small commissions to build trust.

"Booking.com remote rater. 30 tasks/day, $250 commission, paid in USDT. WhatsApp +44 7xxx to start."

Red flags to spot

  • Were you recruited by cold message, with no interview?
  • Does the 'company' impersonate a real brand (Amazon, Booking, TikTok)?
  • Is pay in USDT/crypto, not into a normal bank account?
  • Is the 'work' just clicking a button in a web app?
2

The 'combination task' deposit trap

After easy early tasks, you hit a 'lucky' or 'combination' task that puts your balance negative. To continue you must top up from your own funds — and another negative task always follows.

"Combination task triggered! Top up 800 USDT to complete and unlock $2,400 commission."

Red flags to spot

  • Did the platform suddenly require YOUR money to continue?
  • Is your dashboard 'balance' growing but withdrawals locked?
  • Is a 'mentor' or group chat pushing you to deposit more?
  • Is each top-up followed by another bigger required top-up?

Red flags

  • 🚩Recruited cold on WhatsApp/Telegram/TikTok with no real interview
  • 🚩Asked to deposit your own money to 'unlock' or 'continue' tasks
  • 🚩Earnings displayed in a dashboard you can't actually withdraw fully
  • 🚩Mentor/coach in a group chat pushing you to top up more
  • 🚩Payment in crypto (USDT) rather than salary into your bank
  • 🚩Company name doesn't exist or impersonates a real brand (Amazon, Booking.com)

What to do

  1. 1Stop topping up — every extra deposit is lost. The 'combination task' will never end.
  2. 2Leave the group chat and block the recruiter and mentor.
  3. 3Report to Scamwatch, ReportCyber and the platform you were recruited on.
  4. 4If you sent USDT, report the wallet to the exchange (Binance, OKX) — they sometimes freeze funds.
  5. 5Tell friends — this scam spreads fast through student and migrant networks.

Who's targeted

  • Students and recent migrants seeking flexible side income.
  • Members of WhatsApp / Telegram / TikTok job groups.

Why it works

  • Real small commissions are paid out early to build trust.
  • 'Combination tasks' suddenly push your balance negative, forcing top-ups.

Common variations

Different shapes of the same scam — recognise the pattern.

  • 1'Amazon hotel review' role.
  • 2'YouTube optimisation' liking videos for commission.
  • 3'Booking.com hotel ranker' with a fake dashboard.

If you've already been scammed

  1. 1Stop topping up — the next task will always require more money.
  2. 2Leave the group and block the recruiter and 'mentor'.
  3. 3If you paid in USDT, ask Binance / OKX to flag the wallet.

Frequently asked

Are these jobs ever real?

No real employer asks you to deposit money to keep earning.

Why did the first $20 land in my bank?

It's a hook — small early payouts are funded by your own future deposits.

Can crypto be recovered?

Rarely. Report quickly and the exchange may freeze part of it.
